Introduction to Lingerie and Swimwear Sewing

Please note: This course will be taught in French. For our English-speaking students, the subject of this class can be covered during private classes with Sonia.

Level: I'm good at sewing: I've already taken a beginner's class or taught myself, I know how to thread a sewing machine, I've already used a pattern and sewn one or two garments. I'm willing to practice the precision needed to create beautiful finishes on stretchy fabrics. I'm even willing to do homework :)

Objectives: Learn the basic techniques needed to create and make simple underwear and swimwear without underwire, to my measurements.

Duration: 5 lessons / 3 hours per lesson / 1 lesson per week / total of 15 hours

Materials: You will have access to one of our sewing machines, our tutorial, patterns, and tools. We provide the fabric and supplies for your panty prototype. However, you will need to purchase fabric and supplies for your top, or purchase them from the studio.

What you’ll learn: In this introductory course to lingerie or swimwear making, you will learn how to sew a simple lingerie or swimwear set (without underwire or padding) and adjust the prototype to your measurements. You will discover the different types of finishes possible as well as techniques for adding elastic. We will mainly use the domestic machine. Sergers will also be available for those who prefer to use it.

• Lesson 1: Theory on fabrics and elastics, taking measurements, cutting the pattern, fabric, and elastics for your panty prototype. Explanation about the proper sewing techniques for attaching elastics.
• Lesson 2: Assembling your panty prototype. If you didn't complete the assembly during the lesson, we will ask you to complete the prototype at home.
• Lesson 3: Theory on cup size, taking your measurements, cutting the pattern, the fabric and the elastics for your top prototype.
• Courses 4 and 5: Assembling your top prototype and learning the various techniques associated with creating swimwear and lingerie. Fitting and modifying patterns as needed.

***Depending on the complexity of your designs, you may not be able to fully finalize your projects within the class hours... It is quite possible that your teacher will ask you to do some homework! The objective of this class is not to make a perfect little set the first time, but rather to show you the techniques necessary to allow you to create your own swimsuits or lingerie items once you get home :)***
