Free guide: how to choose your fabrics?
How to choose fabric for a sewing project
Choosing fabric is often the most exciting step… and the most overwhelming when you are new to sewing. Between materials, textures, technical terms, and pattern recommendations, it is easy to feel lost.
Fibre, yarn, fabric: what is the difference?
Before choosing a fabric, it is helpful to understand a key distinction:
- Fibre is the base material (cotton, linen, wool, polyester…)
- Yarn is made by spinning fibres together
- Fabric is created by weaving or knitting yarns
For example, a cotton fabric can be a woven cotton (stable) or a cotton jersey (stretchy). Same fibre… but completely different behaviour! This is why fabric cannot be chosen based on composition alone.
Why fabric matters so much
Fabric determines:
- the garment’s drape
- comfort
- ease of sewing
- ... and therefore the final result
The same pattern can look completely different depending on the fabric used.
Basic fabric types
Woven fabrics
Stable and generally easier to sew (cotton, linen, lightweight denim). Ideal for beginners.
Stretch fabrics (knits)
Comfortable but more technical, as they can stretch during sewing (jersey, knit).
A good choice for beginners
If you are just starting out, choose stable fabrics such as:
- cotton poplin
- lightweight linen
- soft denim
They allow you to learn without unnecessary complexity.
Common mistakes
- Choosing fabric only for its appearance
- Ignoring pattern recommendations
- Using a fabric that is too difficult for your skill level
In summary: the right fabric always depends on the project, the pattern, and your experience level.
