This unisex style features a hip pocket and a drawstring waistband for easy size adjustment. The top of the apron is lined for a pop of color and extra durability :) A perfect project for BBQ season!
We have prepared a short video so you can sew this project with us from the comfort of your home :)
We strongly recommend that you refer to this one as we explain each step in detail! For those with a little more sewing experience, here are the steps to follow to create your apron:
The first step is to assemble the waistband! To do this, fold the band in 4 lengthwise and topstitch around the edge. You will need to repeat the same steps for the neck band, but it will not be necessary to topstitch the ends as they will be inserted into a seam when we assemble the lining to the top of the apron :)
Next, you will need to apply the neck band to the top of the apron, leaving a 1.5cm seam allowance on each side. Overlap the lining against the fabric, sandwiching the neck band, and assemble the pieces, right sides together, respecting a 1.5cm seam allowance.
Now you'll need to prepare the pocket. This involves folding the top of the pocket over twice by 1.5cm and topstitching the top of the pocket in place. Then, you'll need to press the sides and bottom of the pocket together, leaving a 1.5cm seam allowance, overlapping it over the bottom of the apron, and topstitching the pocket in place.
Once the pocket is sewn, the bottom of the apron will need to be finished. The hem will need to be turned twice at a distance of 7 and 8mm respectively and topstitched in place at a distance of 2mm from the edge of the pocket.
The top and skirt of the apron are completed and now we need to join the 2 pieces together! To do this, position the right side of the top of the apron against the right side of the bottom of the apron (do not take the lining in this seam) and assemble the two pieces respecting a seam allowance of 1.5cm. Subsequently, we will press the bottom of the lining piece at a distance of 1.5cm so that the bottom of the latter is aligned with the assembly seam that we have just made. The 2 layers will be held together with a topstitch located 2mm from the seam.
Once the waist seam is complete, we will need to make another topstitch on the top of the apron to create a casing. This is where the belt will be inserted :) To do this, draw a line 5cm from the waist seam and make a straight seam from one side of the top of the apron to the other!
All you have to do is insert the belt with a safety pin and you're done :)
We loved this project so much that we made several copies :) And let's admit it, our "steak" patterned apron was a bit lacking in vegetables! So we present to you the vegan version completed by our student and collaborator Jessica from Jess_fildespagescouture ! We warmly invite you to follow her adventures and various "sewings" :)
We hope this tutorial will help you make your own :) If you live in Montreal and need a little help, don't hesitate to come visit us at Atelier Libre !
