Create tree decorations with patterns

In this tutorial, we will show you how to use transfer paper to create beautiful ornaments that will add a festive touch to your surroundings :)

You will need:

  • An inkjet printer
  • Our vintage silhouette images ( download HERE )
  • 30cm of very stiff cotton canvas (12 oz canvas) for the base of the decorations
  • 2 sheets of transfer paper (available in stationery stores and at Staples)
  • Supplies that will allow you to decorate and dress up your silhouettes! Now is the time to get out your sequins and embroidery threads :)

We are happy to share the images to print on your transfer paper with you! However, we encourage you to make your own from your own images! You can easily digitize images or use photos you have. With a little photo montage, you will be able to maximize the available space on your transfer paper, print it and start creating! Don't forget to mirror your image before printing otherwise your silhouette will not look the way you want!

You can also transfer these images onto all sorts of projects, but be careful: transfer paper is plastic! It is therefore sensitive to heat, does not stretch, and tends to come off in the wash! That's why we use it mostly for decorative objects, including these pretty ornaments for our tree :)

Print on transfer paper
Have you printed your image? Now you'll need to cut out each silhouette individually, leaving a 5mm white border. Once transferred to the fabric, this strip will transform into a plastic film and hold the canvas threads, preventing it from fraying.

Cut out the silhouettes
To transfer the image onto your fabric, place the right side of the transfer paper against the right side of the fabric and press carefully following the manufacturer's instructions.

Stick the transfer paper
Wait for the fabric to cool a little before attempting to lift the paper! Lift a corner and pull to reveal the design!

Peel off the silhouette
Cut out the different silhouettes, leaving a white border of approximately 4mm around the silhouettes.

And now you can decorate them! We chose to use sequins, guipure, pompoms, and embroidery thread! It is the holiday season, after all! To keep the sequins in place before embroidering them, we used double-sided adhesive tape, which makes the process much easier!

Sew beads
With the embroidery threads, we covered small sections of our silhouettes by weaving! Hours of fun :) Once nicely decorated, all that's left is to insert an embroidery thread at the top of the ornament and tie a knot so you can hang it on your tree :)
